Homework Support Program goes to top of the class

Girraween Community Centre has become a hive of activity every Tuesday afternoon during school terms, following the establishment last term of the After School Homework Support Program.

Centre Co-ordinator Justin Flint said the program had been assisted by the high calibre of volunteers who were giving their time each week to help the students, with the number of students using the program growing this term to eight.

"We have a great group of volunteers including UNE Education lecturer Andrew Simpson, UNE student Nicola Liu and Dave Curry who every week assist both primary and high school students will a broad range of homework issues," Mr Flint said.

Girraween Community Centre is located at 3 Alexander Street, West Armidale and has grown and developed in recent years as needs were identified from within the community. The Centre provides a range of advocacy, referral, information and advice services on a broad range of community facilities.

The Council's Community Services Manager Jane Guilfoyle said the Homework Support Program was established in response to requests to assist families who were new arrivals to Armidale.

"The Centre provides a range of information and advocacy services that tackle issues identified within the Armidale community, including after-school activities, womens' and mens' programs, drug and alcohol issues, domestic violence, housing and employment issues," Mrs Guilfoyle said.

"The Homework Support Program provides afternoon tea and one-on-one tutoring that assist the students cope with their school work load. There is opportunity to expand the program and as such, we are looking for additional volunteers and students."

The Homework Support Program runs each Tuesday afternoon from 4pm to 5pm during school terms.
