Youth workshops benefit our younger residents
Armidale Dumaresq Council, in collaboration with the Youth Services Network, are co-ordinating two youth workshops next week.
The first workshop will be conducted on Wednesday, October 28 by Peter Slattery and will focus on youth work. The second workshop will be conducted by Vanessa Meachen from Philanthropy Australia and will focus on grant.
The workshop with Mr Slattery, who is also facilitating the 2009 Youth Forum, will run for a full day and is based around engaging young people and sustaining meaningful conversations with them. Mr Slattery is a renowned youth worker who has worked with adults, young people and their families. He has worked both in Australia and overseas and is a highly sought after presenter.
Local youth worker Bernie Shakeshaft has known Mr Slattery for some time and says the workshop would be very beneficial.
"Pete has extremely effective ways of engaging people," Mr Shakeshaft said. "I have participated in forums and workshops presented by Peter in the past and he has proven to have some of the most useful, practical, hands on approaches and is extremely good at transferring that knowledge.
"I have for some time now been incorporating techniques learned from Peter to engage the young people I work with. I encourage anyone who is able to attend to do so."
The Council's Youth Co-ordinator Sally Schofield said the second workshop focused on grant writing.
"The grant writing workshop runs for a half day and again has limited places," Ms Schofield said. "If you are a group or service who is interested in seeking grant funding then this workshop could be of assistance. Philanthropy Australia usually charges $180 per participant to attend this workshop in Sydney or Melbourne, and with assistance from Armidale Dumaresq Council we are able to offer this workshop for $100 per participant. Spaces are limited so early registration is advised."
