Armidale - A Regional Centre of Health and Wellbeing
Armidale is a regional centre for Health and Wellbeing covering environmental, physical, spiritual and social areas.
Advantages of the location.
Armidale is situated high on the northern tablelands of New South Wales, midway between Sydney and Brisbane on the New England Highway.
With close proximity to New England National Parks, the 'gorgeous gorges', and just over two hour's drive from the coast along the Waterfall Way, Armidale is ideally placed as a regional centre for healthy communities.
Health and wellbeing plays an important role in the life of the city.
Armidale is 'top of the mountain' in health and wellbeing, with a diverse range of sporting, recreational, cultural and educational services and facilities.
With a great choice of outdoor activities, Armidale promotes healthy lifestyles for the whole family, with a particular focus on active youth and children.
Armidale has extensive sporting facilities including many parks, sporting fields and bike tracks around the town, as well as diverse sports facilities and activities at the university sports centre. The city holds major events that reflect health and wellbeing, such as the annual Relay for Life event.
Other local youth events involve venues like the four cross bike track, the skate park and the Aquatic Centre.
There are also a number of community groups in the area, who welcome new participants in the outdoor activities they promote. These include the Armidale Urban Rivercare Group (AURG), The Armidale Tree Group and Armidale Challenge community garden project.
A regional centre for health services and education.
Armidale offers an appealing array of complementary therapies as well as sound traditional health services. In particular, Armidale boasts an extensive and diverse range of complementary and alternative health services, ranging from acupunture, naturopathy, and reflexology to meditation, massage and beauty therapy.
The Armidale Health Service currently supports a wide range of specialist surgical services, including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The community-based services operating in Armidale provide a strong backbone to health and wellbeing service provision, covering mental health, drug and alcohol housing and employment services.
Armidale is continually expanding as a centre for health and wellbeing learning, as more and more potential practitioners are drawn to the tertiary health practitioner education offered here. For example, the University of New England offers courses in nursing, counselling, gerontology, health management and health science, as well as psychology, and biological biomedical and Molecular sciences.
Other courses in community services, including aromatherapy, remedial massage, aged care and welfare are offered by the New England TAFE. UNE Partnerships, (the commercial arm of the University of New England), also offer a range of courses relevant to health and wellbeing professionals and the community generally.
